LET’S TALK ABOUT NICHE MARKETING

5/13/13 Now let’s talk about marketing your Niche.  You have picked a new area or “tooled down” an existing area.  You actually now need a new marketing plan just for this Niche.  Start with you is your target market and then decide how to reach them.  Is it by LinkedIn? by the web? by what they read? by what organizations they belong to?
Be sure to update your Linkedin and AVVO accounts.  You might even send out a large (5×7) postcard to your “A” and “B” contacts categories letting them know you are now opening up this area in your practice.  Or do an eblast to these contacts.  Brainstorm with a friend or colleague and see what other ideas you can come up with.
Writing, speaking and networking with your target market is also a quick and easy way to let them know you exist.  Good Luck…..more to come……

FINDING YOUR NICHE

5/6/13 Let’s keep going with finding your Niche!  What have you come up with?  If you are still having trouble, think about the area of law you presently practice.  Say you practice family law.  How could you niche out family law.  You could focus on custody issues, men’s  problems, dependency issues, women’s issues, or parenting or gay marriage to start.
Next you could become an expert in one of these areas.  Write , speak and even publish a small handbook to help clients.  Marketing this area on LinkedIn and AVVO and on your website.  Don’t worry about cutting off other referrals, we know that niching often produces even more business with the broader area (that’s how it works).
Its as easy as 1,2,3 and more knowledge always makes you a better lawyer.

PRESENTING A SEMINAR AT BERLINER COHEN IN SAN JOSE

4/29/13 Sorry, I missed all of you last week.  I was busy presenting a Niche Marketing Seminar for the ABA at BerlinerCohen in San Jose.  It was well attended and the participants seem to really get alot out of it.  Most went away with some sort of an identified Niche to start marketing.
What’s your Niche? You have already Niched somewhat by deciding on the area of law you are practicing.  Now take that and “drill it down” to more focused perimeters. Keep doing this until you come up with a viable Niche which would have the possibility of marketing to a sufficient audience to get clients.
This is frequently done by addressing the need of the actual clients you have already… if you want more information, give me a call.
Remember:  MY AGENDA IS YOUR SUCCESS…..and greater success can come from “nicheing”

CELEBRATING AN ANNIVERSARY

4/15/13  It’s TAX DAY.  and my 26th year of being a Solo and now Coach.  I did start my Solo practice 26 years ago on April 15th because I decided if the IRS could get rich on that day so could I.

Are you celebrating an anniversary soon?  It’s good to mark a day to look back on what you have accomplished and decide what you want to do next.  Use today to do just that:  WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH NEXT IN YOUR LIFE?   Write that down and put it on your bathroom mirror or on the edge of your computer. Magic will happen…..I guarantee it.

DOING IS BETTER THAN PERFECT

4/8/13 “DOING IS BETTER THAN PERFECT”   This is a Facebook motto….and should be one for us.  “IF ITS WORTH DOING, ITS WORTH DOING”  “JUST DO IT”.

This has some basis in procrastation.  Being a perfectionist is harmful to lawyering time management but being sloppy is also harmful. So hit a happy medium and identify one thing that you need to get done this week.  Then plan how and when you are going to do it.  Write that plan down and calendar to reach the goal within a reasonable time.
That’s your task for this week.  You can let me or a friend know what you have chosen and this will  give the task more weight  and then just do it.

IT’S APRIL FOOL’S DAY

4/1/13 Yes, today is April Fool’s Day.  I wonder how that came to be?  Why is playing tricks on people fun?  I myself hate that show about being “pranked”….to embarass someone is stupid.
You would never intentionally embarass a client and you certainly don’t want to be embarrassed.

That comes with being the kind of person you want the other people in your life to be.  What happened last week when you started to be that kind of person? It would be interesting to keep some kind of notes about how this is working.  It is a large undertaking……but certainly worth doing.  More to come…..

BE THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WANT OTHERS TO BE

3/25/13 It is Monday morning.  What one thing did you do last week that showed you were the kind of person that you want others to be in your life?

Did you smile at a stranger?  Did you ask someone about their business?  Did you listen to your kid while they babbled on?  Did you suggest a date night to your partner?  Did you ask someone to lunch?  Did you offer to mentor someone?

Let’s see how many ways you can be that kind of person this week…..report back to me, especially all the goodies that you are going to get from this exercise!!!

WHAT ABOUT SMALL TALK?

3/18/13 Had a thought I want to share with all of you who don’t like “small talk” and “direct one on one marketing”.  Instead of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  Let’s try Be unto others as you would have them be unto you.
What this means is if you want someone to be interested in what you do, then be interested in what they do, who they are, and what they need.  THIS IS THE BASIS OF ALL GOOD NETWORKING AND PERSONAL INTERACTION.

If you need magic words to open the conversation they can be ” Any interesting things happen to you this week?’  or ” What brings you here?” or ” What is your area of practice?”.  BE SINCERE.

Be exactly the kind of person that you want in your life.  People who are open to support and acknowledge you and help in any way that they can.
